Large Financial Services Company - India

Problem/Opportunity

The Client is one of the top financial services businesses in India currently engaged in life insurance, general insurance and consumer finance businesses and has plans to expand its business by offering a wide array of financial products and services in India. They engaged Scalability Experts to perform a Database performance audit of their Datamartprod server and formulate specific recommendations with regard to performance tuning and optimization.  The Datamartprod server was running on Windows 2008 Enterprise version and was a 32 GB RAM, four socket (32 logical processors) machine. This server had two SQL Server instances namely Default (Datamartprod) and Extranet. The main pain points for this client were:

  1. Sometimes the server ran slowly during peak hours.
  2. The monthly process of inserting and updating of the tables took a lot of time.

Scalability Experts performed an analysis of the two specified servers and delivered a formal report of the analyses, including quantitative and qualitative findings, comparisons, recommendations and raw data.

Solution/Capabilities

Scalability Experts started by collecting data for the analysis using standard Microsoft tools. SE collected data from Perfmon, profiler, DMV Scripts, Server info, error logs, Server logs, Output of scripts which collected information on user and system databases. SE collected an extensive number of Performance Monitor (PerfMon) counters on the database servers. The Performance Monitor collection process was scheduled to run for 2 days in 2 sets. The Profiler trace windows were chosen to capture necessary information with minimal impact on the Bajaj Financial server’s database servers. The analysis of data began with common counters that indicate CPU, Memory or I/O pressure. All data analysis happened offsite at SE office.  A formal Report that included all recommendations was developed and presented to the client.  The recommendations were prioritized into short-term and long-term goals defined to meet client’s own outcomes and expectations. Short-term recommendations were further weighted to show their relative performance benefit, and the level of effort that would be required to implement them. The SQL Server Scalability Analysis formal report included the following:

  1. Recommendations on specific optimizations
  2. Recommendations for ongoing performance tuning

Results

The analysis identified bottlenecks in memory usage on both Servers during the data capture period.  The disk congestion was noticed on servers and it was found that I/O systems were handling the load on D drive.  A host of other observations were made in the overall system configuration and they were shared with the client in the form of a detailed Report. The detailed Report helped the client understand the issues that were hampering the system performance and the remedial steps needed to improve performance.
