Global Building Materials Company – India

Introduction

The Client is a Global building materials company with core businesses including the manufacture and distribution of cement, and the production, processing and distribution of aggregates (crushed stone, gravel and sand). They had to maintain a number of records to keep a track of the Business activities. They wanted the same records / data to be present at their respective plants which were present at different locations across India. In short they wanted to replicate their data from their Mumbai office to all their sub-branches present at different locations. For this purpose they wanted a back-end application which could meet their requirements. Currently, they had an application which used to do the work of replicating the data but it took a lot of time and the latency level was quite high. They wanted a superior Replication model with minimum latency.

Solution/Capabilities

SE decided to go with the Transactional Replication Model as the client only wanted its data to be replicated at a regular interval. Transactional Replication best suited their requirement. The client used SAP as their front end application so SE had to establish a connection string through which the data from the SAP would transfer to the central server in which MSSQL replication was configured on SQL Server Standard edition. The Transactional Replication was configured with push subscription. Once the replication was configured SE installed two tools to monitor the Replication process. These were the Replication monitor and the PowerShell. Using replication monitor the client could keep an eye on the process if it was working fine or otherwise. Using PowerShell allowed the client to monitor even the disk space. From the Central Server the Data was then replicated to the various plants Pan India. SQL express editions for this purpose were installed at all 28 client locations.

Results

Due to the new Replication process transfer of data was much faster. SE also implemented some disaster recovery strategies in order to restore the data due to any failure. This ensured that the Database was up and running even during failures. This ensured that the Client had all the relevant data available at all time at all locations which ensured that the Business errors arising due to Data mismatch or Data unavailability could be avoided.
