“So You Inherited The DBA Position. Now What?”
Presenter: Don Vilen, Principal Architect
Abstract: The veteran DBA left and your boss decided you should become the new DBA. Now you’ve come to the Summit to learn everything you can about SQL Server so you can be a great DBA. But where do you start? Which questions should you ask? Vilen’s presentation will provide the advice and insight the new DBA will need to achieve success, including addressing correctness, concurrency, maintenance, replication, high availability and disaster recovery, storage, performance, and monitoring. The presentation will touch on many other important areas that will help you meet the challenges of the DBA.
“Upgrading to SQL Server 2008: Lessons learned and recommended practices”
Presenter: Joe Yong, Chief Architect
Abstract: Performing a major version upgrade can be a daunting task considering how many moving parts today’s applications typically have. Verifying that your application will work without problems is no small feat. Issues such as TSQL compatibility, system and user function, deprecated features, security models, etc., all contribute to making complicating your testing efforts. This session will cover both tools and application compatibility testing methodology developed joint by Microsoft and Scalability Experts. Beyond just static analysis of your database, this session will also provide detailed guidance on how to test actual code execution against SQL Server 2008 including dynamic SQL for both in-place upgrade and side-by-side (migrate) methods.
“Database Governance to the MAX! How to get your SQL Server ready for F1 racing”
Presenter: Rajinder Gill, Co-founder and CTO, Scalability Experts, Inc.
Abstract: Any car that enters the F1 race MUST perform at the top of its level for the entire duration of the race. A minor lapse will result in elimination. These cars go through a robust set of preparation, configuration and testing. This is exactly how a mission critical SQL Server running a billion dollar business should perform. There is zero room for performance degradation or risk in downtime.
This session is based on some of the most advanced content and examples of building workload governance in SQL Server from a real-world perspective. Database Workload Governance (in short DWGov) was first introduced (in a larger setting) at the PASS 2007 conference in Denver. The session had an overwhelming response and was ranked fifth best overall (DBA track) by attendee feedback. While the 2007 PASS session was focused on building intelligent governance using SQL Server 2005 features, with the introduction of ‘Resource Governor’ feature in SQL Server 2008, this presentation takes the concept of governance to a completely new level.
“Using PowerShell to Get the Most out of SQL Server”
Presenter: Allen White, Trainer
Abstract: PowerShell is the new scripting environment from Microsoft for managing server environments. Because PowerShell supports the .Net Framework, accessing SQL Server in a scripting environment is easier than ever before. Whether you need to access data or manage SQL Server, PowerShell makes it possible. This session will give an introduction to PowerShell, explain the basic ADO.Net objects required to connect with SQL Server, and demonstrate accessing SQL Server from PowerShell scripts, both from a data and a management perspective.
“Taking A Tour Into Someone Else’s Solution? Bring a Plan Guide Along!”
Presenter: Keith Nicholson, Senior Trainer
Abstract: Buy vs. Build has often been a decision that DBA get concerned about. If a solution is built internally, the DBA has a chance to make recommendations to improve performance. Yet, many times buy is determined as the “correct” financial decision upfront. However once the solution is in place, there are many factors why the cost of running the queries designed by the Independent Software Vendor are not optimal. SQL Server 2005 originated the idea of supplementing a different execution plan for 3rd Party code without changing the source itself with a new Plan Guide feature. SQL 2008 raises the support for creating Plan Guides to force behavior upon those troublesome queries. Learn how to determine which queries are optimal for Plan Guides; test multiple options and decide the intelligent choice; finally execute and track the usage of your Plan Guides.
“Are you cut out to be a consultant?”
Presenter: Rick Heiges, Senior Solution Consultant
Abstract: This session looks at the skill set needed to become a successful consultant. We will also examine the various “modes” of employment as well as the business aspect of being a consultant. If you are looking for a career change or just want find out more before taking the plunge, come listen and participate in this session.
