Introduction
This customer is one of the largest automotive industry companies in the world. The company wants to evaluate changing their Oracle environment to SQL Server to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO). The customer requested Scalability Experts to conduct a Migration Assessment and a Proof of Concept (POC) to gain insight and recommendations on how to transition to a more centralized shared-services computing environment that would also reduce their IT maintenance and licensing costs.
Problem/Opportunity
The objectives for the engagement were two fold; first, perform migration assessment and scope the migration effort and second, conduct POC to demonstrate the migration process.
Solution/Capabilities
SE gathered performance data and usage profile of selected servers. Additionally, the team conducted subject matter expert (SME) interviews to validate current and future business requirements. During the analysis, SE examined 233 applications running on 138 servers. SE’s analysis and POC results report provided recommendations on the best application migration path to undertake, validated migration processes and cost reductions and delivered an implementation timeline.
Results
SE determined that more than 90% of the applications could be effectively migrated from Oracle to SQL Server. The remaining applications were removed from scope due to high cost of migration, lack of vendor support for COTS applications, etc. SE also completed the POC migrating one low effort and one medium effort application to SQL Server environment. The results validated the migration approach from Oracle, scoped the effort and duration of the implementation process and made the transition to a higher performing SQL Server environment more predictable.
