SSM Taps Into PDW for Big Performance and Productivity Gains

SSM Health Care, a Catholic, not-for-profit health system that operates in four Mid-western states,  was experiencing poor data warehouse performance that was resulting in important analytical reports taking way too long to complete or not even completing at all. SSM also needed to fix several data consistency issues they were experiencing that were impacting the quality of output. SSM source data was coming from their EPIC EMR/EHR system and their ETL/SSIS process was tied to SQL 2008. Migration from Sybase to SQL Server 2008

This company is a global investment and technology development firm with more than 1,300 employees; approximately $19 billion in investment capital as of January 1, 2011; and offices in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Since its organization in 1988, the firm has earned an international reputation for financial innovation, technological leadership, and an extraordinarily distinguished staff.

Poor Performance and Scalability: When the company, one of the largest hedge fund companies in the world, started to experience poor transaction data performance, mission-critical availability issues and concerns with scalability, they called on Scalability Experts (SE) to assess their environment, design a new architecture and migrate their operations to a higher performing platform.

Heterogeneous Environment: The company had an inefficient heterogeneous environment (mixed bag) that included large Sybase databases running on Solaris and SQL 2005 running on HP servers that were underperforming. They also had multiple and different SLA’s to contend with that made their environment costly to manage and maintain. To eliminate issues of complexity, costs and performance SE recommended standardizing on Microsoft’s SQL 2008 Enterprise platform. SE also recommended a unique three tired reference architecture approach that provided a framework to cost effectively match up the criticality of the databases in order to not over engineer the support costs for lower priority applications.

This customer is a global provider and pioneer of metering, data collection and utility software solutions for the Power & Utility industry.  The company hired Scalability Experts (SE) to help them improve the scalability, availability and performance (scale up to 2 million customer meters per day) of their Microsoft based BI software product suite.  The product provides software tools and predictive analytic capabilities critical to realizing the benefits and value of Smart Grid technology.  An operator using predictive analytics to manage their Smart Grid operations helps them to:

  • Improve energy conservation
  • Aggregate multiple supply sources of alternative clean energy
  • Enable consumer empowerment so that the end-user can lower their monthly usage costs
  • Reduce equipment failure and outages

The customer was skeptical at first if the Microsoft BI platform stack could effectively scale to significantly higher data volumes and with them being behind on their development schedule they considered other platform options for their product.  With several Utilities already using an early version of the product, they decided to further investigate the capabilities of the Microsoft BI platform and called in Scalability Experts to evaluate the architecture and to make changes to their product.
